Mary Knight has over 40 years in the racing industry. Starting out in 1968 as a hot-walker on the Quarter Horse Circuit, she has worked as a groom, exercise rider, assistant trainer, trainer, farm manager, bloodstock agent and breeder.

She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association. She moved to the Thoroughbred business in 1972. In 1973, after receiving the highest score ever by a candidate for a trainer’s license in California, Mary took a job as assistant trainer to Bobby Frankel where she oversaw the second string for that stable.

Mary opened a small public stable of her own in 1975 and won her first race as a trainer. She married Chay Knight in that same year and they worked together to develop a very successful racing stable, winning many of the most prestigious stakes races on the Southern California Circuit, including the Santa Anita Derby, Malibu, San Felipe, San Vicente, Will Rogers, Providencia Stakes, Sorrento Stakes, Hollywood Juvenile Championship, and many more.
